Nothing bugs us more than ugly websites. Sometimes we get a client who has just had their website designed, and it is hideous!  They have wasted sometimes thousands of dollars on a terrible website. We can’t really wrap our brains around poorly set up layouts, bad graphics, horrible color combination etc. When your website is ugly, your visitors won’t like it.  I know that seems obvious, but it’s true.  Your ugly website will be reflected in your sales, and website popularity.  This post is about our main peeves about ugly websites.

#1 Pixelated Images

This boggles the mind!  When you see an image that is poor quality.  Many times it the company or organization’s logo in the header that is pixelated.  This is a big no-no.  Please, optimize your images so you can maintain picture quality.  If all else fails, and your image is pixelated, just don’t put it on your website.

#2 Poorly Cropped & Cut Out Images & Graphics

Another duh to us.  If your logo in the header has a white background, but your header is black, and a designer didn’t account for the color difference, that’s really not graphically appealing.  On the other hand if a web designer tried to cut the logo out leaving the edges chopping, and specs of the white left, this is no good either.

#3 Horrible Color Scheme

Some websites have ugly color combinations that ruin the design of the website even if the layout is good and functional. Designing ugly websites almost at times seems like a skill also We have had some clients request what I would call and ugly design.  Since they would not budge on the ugliness, these were some of the hardest sites we have worked on.  I had to think “does that look bad?… Yep now it is perfect.”

#4 Poor Layout

The layout of your website is crucial.  This is especially true if you have an online store or e-commerce website.  If your visitors, and customers can’t easily navigate your website, you won’t sell much.  People are used to Amazon, so your website should be easy to maneuver in, like Amazon is… Well Amazon is a mess too, but that is another post.

#5 Way Too Much Going On

This could be in terms of content, or in terms of busy design.  If your website just has way too much content, in all kinds of different spots, it just overcrowded.  Busy graphics on the other hand are rarely nice look graphics.  A good web designer won’t do a crazy design because it will distract from the purpose of your website.  We’re all for creativity, but avant garde web design probably won’t perform well in the mainstream market.
